Charred timber under flame in the BAUWN workshop

Our Story

Born from a fascination with fire and wood.

“Our story did not begin with a design collection. It began with three people, €20,000 and a belief that fire could do something extraordinary to timber.”

01

Six metres forward. Six metres back.

Our story began in Lithuania in 2022 with Inflamed, our Lithuanian manufacturing company and the workshop behind BAUWN.

We started with €20,000, convinced it would cover the machinery, materials and even leave something for marketing. It did not. After buying a brushing machine, essential tools and our first timber, almost nothing remained.

02

If the machine does not exist, build it.

After more than a year of charring timber by hand, we knew there had to be a better way.

So we designed our own charring chamber.

The first version was not beautiful. Boards were pushed through manually, the refractory construction was improvised and the heat was intense enough to turn parts of the steel red.

03

Lithuania made us. The Netherlands drew us in.

The Netherlands had been part of our lives long before BAUWN existed.

Years of visits became family connections, friendships and a genuine affection for the country - its architecture, design culture, entrepreneurial energy and way of life.

In July 2024, we made that relationship permanent and founded BAUWN B.V. in the Netherlands.

04

Beyond the board.

From the beginning, we believed charred timber could become more than cladding.

Our first experiments became clocks. Then came furniture, lighting and increasingly sculptural forms.

When Gytis joined the workshop, that exploration accelerated.

Projects & Collaborations

“A small team. An ambitious workshop. And a fascination with timber and fire that continues to take us somewhere new.”

The Process

From material to flame to finish.

Accoya®, larch, Japanese cedar and reclaimed timber - selected for grain, character and purpose.

Every material responds differently. Through charring, brushing, finishing and craftsmanship, we work with those differences rather than trying to remove them.

Architectural Timber

Materials that become part of the architecture.

Charred and reclaimed timber for façades, interiors and bespoke architectural applications - developed for projects where material, texture and character matter.

BAUWN Objects

Functional objects with a sculptural presence.

Lighting, clocks, furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces shaped by timber, fire and craftsmanship.

Some become part of the BAUWN collection.

Others will only ever exist once.
