The idea
Relic treats a found piece of oak as something worth exhibiting. The work was not to invent a shape but to decide what to leave alone, and then to give the form a plinth that lets it be looked at properly.

The Story Behind the Piece
Relic treats a found piece of oak as something worth exhibiting. The work was not to invent a shape but to decide what to leave alone, and then to give the form a plinth that lets it be looked at properly.
One oak form, one charred plinth. The contrast is deliberate: an irregular, grown shape resting on a geometry that is entirely made.
Light comes from below, through the plinth. Raking upwards across the grain, it turns cracks and cavities into embers and casts the sculpture's own texture onto the wall behind it.
The value of this piece is in the timber's own history. Reclaimed oak brings cracks, cavities and colour that only time produces - each one cleaned, stabilised and finished so the object is sound to handle.
The oak form is selected first, then deeply charred and KIME-brushed back to a natural wood colour before sealing; the plinth is then made for that single piece, so the sculpture sits exactly as it was found to stand best.
Specifications

Relic is an object for a console, a sideboard or a plinth of its own. Give it a plain background: the light it throws is part of the piece, and a busy wall competes with it.
