The Story Behind the Piece

The idea

Infinity began with a question about endings. A table normally announces four legs, a top and a stop. We wanted a base that never resolves - a line that turns back into itself so the eye keeps travelling around the form instead of counting its parts.

The form

The base is drawn as one continuous gesture, folded and joined so the seams disappear into the charred surface. Seen from above it reads as a closed loop; seen from a seated height it opens and closes as you move around it.

Timber and light

Charred timber absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so the base sits in a room as a shadow. The smoked glass top does the opposite: it catches the light of the room above the dark structure, and the two readings hold each other in balance.

Why Accoya®

Accoya® is dimensionally stable, which matters when a closed loop carries a glass top: the geometry must stay true. It also chars into a deep, even black without the movement you get from softer species.
