The Story Behind the Piece
Lava came out of the charring itself. Standing at the torch you watch a black crust form over something that is still glowing underneath, and the piece is an attempt to keep that moment rather than let it cool away.
A closed column is opened with a single diagonal cut. From one side the object stays a silent black block; walk around it and the cut releases a warm seam of light, as if the column had been split while still molten.
The inner faces are left far lighter than the outside, so the timber itself carries the colour: the light does not shine at you, it is coloured by the grain it passes across.
A deep diagonal cut through a solid column asks a lot of a timber. Accoya® holds its shape after the flame, which keeps the opening crisp and the two halves aligned.
The column is charred as a whole before it is opened, so the black skin wraps the outside without ever touching the inner faces that carry the light.
Specifications

Lava is a floor piece. Place it against a plain wall or in the corner of a seating area, where the diagonal opening can be discovered as you move past rather than seen all at once.
