The Story Behind the Piece

The idea

Sail takes a heavy material and asks it to look caught in the wind. Oak is dense and slow; the ambition was a plane that seems to lean, as though a gust had just passed through the room.

The form

At 1250 mm high the sail is read from across a room. Its curve is generous on one face and tight on the other, so the object changes weight completely depending on where you stand.

Timber and light

Light is held on the inner face of the curve and never aimed outwards. The body is heavily charred and then brushed back to a natural oak colour, so the warm inner face appears to float against the darker base.

Why oak

Oak has the strength to hold a tall, thin plane without support, and its coarse grain survives deep charring: after brushing, the rings stand proud as a physical texture in warm natural tones.

Made for Your Space

At 1250 mm tall and 570 mm deep, Sail stands beside a sofa or in a corner as a vertical counterweight to low furniture. Allow roughly a metre of clear wall behind it so the curve is not flattened by other objects.
