The Story Behind the Piece

The idea

Dawn is about the first light of a day: not a lamp that fills a room, but a narrow line that announces light is coming. The object stays dark and the seam does the speaking.

The form

Four deep-charred elements are set around a shared centre. Their edges almost meet, and the gap that remains becomes a vertical seam of light running the height of the column.

Timber and light

Because the light escapes only between the elements, the timber edges are always brighter than the faces. The column reads as a black volume with a glowing outline drawn through it.

Why Accoya®

The seam only works if the four elements stay straight and parallel after deep charring. Accoya® is chosen for exactly that stability, and it takes a fine, even deep char across long faces.
