The Story Behind the Piece

The idea

Thorn started with a beam that had already had a working life. Rather than plane that history away, we kept the weathered outside intact and opened only the crown, so the light comes from inside a surface that is clearly old.

The form

The column narrows and breaks open at the top, like a thorn. The cut is deliberately irregular: it follows what the timber allowed rather than a drawn line.

Timber and light

Old pine is full of resin lines, nail shadows and slow-grown rings. Lit from within the crown, all of that becomes legible - the light is essentially a reading device for a hundred years of grain.

Why reclaimed pine

No new timber can imitate a surface that weather and use have made. Reclaimed pine gives the piece a past, and each column can only be made once.

Made for Your Space

Thorn belongs where its surface can be seen closely - beside a stair, in a hallway or next to a seating group - with enough darkness around it for the crown to register.
